How to achieve smooth & healthy lips

Chapped Lips

We are frequently passing out ChapSticks around the office with the ever-changing seasons. I'm not sure if it's because they are so hard to keep track of or if our lips are just that dehydrated. Maybe both. Either way, we need to take care of our lips. There is nothing worse than the discomfort of dry, cracked skin, so we need to keep them hydrated.

Chapped or cracked lips can be caused by several things:

  • Seasons changing
  • Too much sun exposure
  • Excessive licking of the lips
  • Certain medications

Since our lips don't contain oil glands like the rest of skin does, they lack what would normally help regulate warmth, hydration, and moisture. Therefore, our lips tend to dry out more frequently than other parts of our body. Our lips only have about four or five layers of skin compared to our face, which typically has roughly 16 layers. With only a few layers, our blood vessels are less protected, which is why we see a natural pinkish/red color.

Our lips are also very sensitive to touch and temperature. When we take a sip of our morning coffee and realize that it's way too hot, our lips are first to feel the burn. Lips have the highest level of touch receptor cells in our body, so touch is also intensified.
