Signs you may benefit from an occlusal appliance

Posted on: June 8th, 2018 | Categories: Blog

Teeth grinding also known as bruxism can have a large impact on the overall health of our teeth. Bruxism is a condition in which we grind or clench our teeth; this can happen during the day or throughout the night.  According to the American Sleep Association bruxism can go undetected, as it typically occurs at night in the early stages of sleep.

So what causes teeth grinding/clenching?

Bruxism can be caused by several different factors depending on the patient. Teeth grinding or clenching can be caused by anxiety, stress, and increased levels of hostility, misalignment of the upper and lower teeth, and sleeping disorders.  It may be helpful to incorporate an evening relaxation routine such as deep breathing, yoga session or cup of tea before bedtime.

What are the symptoms of bruxism?

  • Loud teeth grinding
  • Chipped, loose, or fractured teeth
  • Enamel that has been worn down
  • Increased tooth pain or sensitivity
  • Jaw aches, locked jaw, neck pain
  • Inconsistent sleep patterns
So can you test for Bruxism?

We offer two separate scans to help us explain where you show signs of high contact grinding/ clenching.

  1. Tekscan- This scan will help Dr. Cardenas and our hygiene team measure your bite force and pressure (contact force) after analyzing the report, if she feels you may be a great candidate for night guard we would then scan you will our Itero.
  2. The Itero- allows us to take a digital impression, very fast and effective. Once we take this scan we are able to send your case out to the lab.
How can a night guard help me?

A night guard is an oral appliance which is custom fitted to your teeth. This appliance helps protect your teeth by separating the top and bottom teeth from one another,  preventing your jaw from shifting side to side. Night guards are made out of very durable material, and we have seen many patients who benefit from these appliances.
