Dr. Cardenas and her family were recently featured in the Wellesley Weston Magazine. This is the first series of articles that explore the different reasons and circumstances that bring international families to settle in the US, specifically in the Wellesley-Weston area.
The main idea behind this series is to present a different picture of the immigration process, which is not commonly discussed in the media. As well as to highlight the contribution and value that international families bring to our communities.
In Dr. Cardenas case it all started in 1999, she had just finished her first post graduate degree in dentistry in native Caracas, Venezuela. She was deciding how to continue her academic journey. Out of all the different schools and cities in the US, she and her newly wedded husband chose to move to Boston. They chose Boston because of the high level of educational opportunities and the best dental schools were located here. She then received her degree in Advance Education in General Dentistry at BU and achieved an honors position within her class.B Next, she was awarded a scholarship to complete her DMD.
Leaving Venezuela and stabilizing in the US was not her initial plan. However, the opportunities to develop a successful dental practice, continue her academic growth as well as raising her family which has been a remarkable and testament to the combination of hard work, determination and opportunity.
