Why we are implementing pH testing as part of our hygiene visits?
Having an overall healthy pH balance can be very beneficial. Our pH of the mouth is measured by the level of acidity versus alkalinity of any given substance. Our pH is measured on a scale from 0 (most acidic) to 14 (most alkaline). The pH level in our mouth can negatively affect our teeth and gums if not balanced. Healthy pH should be around 5.7, anything less will prove that your mouth is acidic. When a patients mouth measures acidic if left unbalanced it can leave you with bad breath, accumulated plaque, demineralization of your teeth, gingivitis, and periodontal disease. What we like to see are patients with an alkaline environment throughout the mouth. Alkaline provides a great environment for good bacteria and is essential for our oral health.
How can we balance our levels of pH?
• Try to avoid sipping on sugary drinks throughout the day(coffee, soda, juices) • Drink plenty of water • Brush and floss twice a day
We are now incorporating pH testing of the mouth into our routine hygiene visits with our patients. This is an extra yet important step when monitoring our patients overall oral health. We've seen various levels of pH depending on the patient and patient’s history as well as diet. Our hygeine team will discuss treatment options to implement at home to help our patients maintain a balanced pH.
